After Hungary and Spain, Italy is the third country in just over a year that no longer appears to be strategically relevant for Vodafone. According to its own statements, Vodafone wants to bring its own portfolio to a suitable size for more growth. The aim is to focus on resources in markets that have sustainable structures and sufficient local scale. At the same time, however, the divestment gains should also be welcome to reduce the debt burden.
For Swisscom, the acquisition of Vodafone Italy would be the first takeover in Italy for years. Following a successful completion, Swisscom would merge Vodafone Italy with Fastweb, which was acquired in 2007, and become the clear number 2 in the Italian telecommunications market. In addition to telecommunications solutions, Swisscom will then also be able to roll out its IT services more easily in Italy.
